It’s time to mark your calendars again a

March 2, 2015

It’s time to mark your calendars again and save the date: Saturday, March 28– The St. Mary’s River Clean-up and Celebration hosted by the St. Mary’s River Management Committee and the St. Marys EarthKeepers, Inc.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers from four counties (Charlton, Camden, Nassau, Baker) work together to free our lovely river of the detritus that stifles her breath and sullies the marshes.

Last year, 94 St. Marys volunteers (including our entire City Council) collected 54 33-gallon bags of trash, 26 bags of recyclable material plus carpets, broken furniture, tires, plumbing fixtures, rotting boards and other debris from the roadside, riverfront and ditches. And that’s just what they could reach.

The cleanup will take place along the shorelines of the St. Marys River (and its tributaries) in Nassau and Baker counties in Florida and Camden and Charlton counties in Georgia. The celebration picnic, following the cleanup, will take place at White Oak Plantation in Nassau County, FL (581705 White Oak Road Yulee, FL 32097) at 11:30 and end at 1:30. (A ticket is necessary for entrance into White Oak.)

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Anyone who wishes to volunteer can participate in the cleanup. Volunteers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register as a group, family or individual, contact Dean Woehrle at (904) 845-2806 or, in St. Marys, Alex Kearns at (alexkearns1@msn.com)

St. Marys volunteers will meet at Howard Gilman City Park (St. Marys waterfront) at 9 am and work until 12 pm, followed by lunch at White Oak Plantation. Volunteers each year span ages from six years old to eighty-plus. http://ow.ly/i/8FefC http://ow.ly/i/8Fegp
